Dear parents and guardians,

As a school community, we have embarked on the journey to deepen our understanding of a Growth Mindset.  The photo offers a sample of what the Growth Mindset says. We believe that this language positively influences learning. We define it this way:  with consistent effort, it is possible to increase intelligence levels, talents, and abilities.

I invite you to try this at home with your children.  We are often tempted to give up when things get hard. Students thinking in this way may run from challenges, see mistakes as failures, or approach success differently than classmates who have adopted a Growth Mindset.

As educators, we are modeling what a Growth Mindset says. In the classroom, we talk through challenging situations with our students.  In addition, we provide students with real life opportunities to apply their learning and life experiences to problem solve collaboratively with classmates. Asking students to self-assess and applaud their efforts and perseverance as well as learn from mistakes will go a long way in developing a Growth Mindset in a young mind and even mine!

Warm regards, Robin

Social media and confidentiality I appeal to each person’s sense of decency and urge all parents and caretakers of our students to exercise wise judgement when engaged in social media communications. It has come to my attention that parents of our MTM students have been using social media as a platform to comment on students, families and educators at Murphy. Every year I meet with my professional staff to discuss the need for confidentiality when working with all members of our Murphy family. Our professional practice demands that we uphold the highest level of discretion and wisdom when discussing matters regarding members of our school community. I encourage our parent community to strive to meet the same high standard.

Pick up/Drop off Reminders

  • Do not  park your car in the drop-off lane in the morning

If you need to enter the school when dropping your child off, you need to park in the parking lot. This will allow those who do drop off in the morning a smooth path to do so in a timely fashion and a clear path to the exit.

  • Send in a pick-up note to the teacher when picking up in the cafe at the end of the day.
  • The latest you can pick up a student from the office is 3:00 PM

An email to the teacher may not be read if the teacher is absent or sent late in the day. A note insures this important communication.   Teachers forward your pick up note to the office so their name may be added to the pick-up list.  Phone calls interrupt your child’s valuable instructional time and should be a last resort. If someone other than parent or legal guardian is picking up include his or her name.  All those picking up should have a legal photo identification with them.

If a parent needs to pick up their child from school early, they can do so in the office by signing them out by 3:00. Any pick-ups after 3:00 PM will be in the cafeteria.

Parent–Teacher Conferences will be October 23- after the 1:25 PM dismissal & November 1st.   To facilitate the scheduling of these conferences, your child's teacher will be contacting you to arrange an appointment.  Parents get an opportunity to meet with teachers, discuss your child's progress, share your child's strengths and focus of instruction, and partner with the teacher to help your child succeed in all facets of school.

Branford Public Schools Elementary Libraries are excited to announce their involvement in the Rainbow Libraries Community Leads Project! This initiative, driven by GLSEN Connecticut, sends LGBTQ+ affirming text sets to schools and libraries across Connecticut for free. Here are just a few titles recently added to our libraries which celebrate diversity and inclusion:

Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall

The Boy & the Bindi by Vivek Shraya George by Alex Gino

Reading and Math Info: For every unit of study in Math and Reading there is a letter that informs parents of the topics covered in these units these letters are on the MTM website. The letters summarize what students will be doing in each unit of study. This information is important for parents who want to know what the focus of learning is, and what parents can do at home with their child to reinforce this learning.
