April 23, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I hope this communication finds you and your family safe and healthy.  Your personal and family journey adjusting to the COVID-19 environment must be taxing on many levels. We are committed to working with you to alleviate some of the strain you are feeling by providing educational opportunities through BPS Flex Learning.  This model is completely new and staff are working hard to connect with your children to offer meaningful experiences to engage in.  I know the new “reality” can create a full range of feelings.  We have always worked together and now more than ever our partnership will guide us through the many challenges and the many new firsts created by COVID-19.

Currently the school closure goes through May 20, 2020.  We anticipate the Governor to announce additional information about school closure in the near future.  Regardless if we return to our buildings this year or not, the last day of school is June 15, 2020.  We have modified our school calendar to incorporate periodic days off for students and you. This maintains student engagement by avoiding long periods of no connection to school.

As we continue to learn how best to operate in this learning environment, we request you complete a brief survey.  As students, staff, and families become more comfortable with BPS Flex Learning your experience with the program is important to capture so we can take steps to improve BPS Flex Learning.  To that end, please click here or go to https://forms.gle/r3oudU3JSmrF... to access and complete the survey.  The results will be used to improve our current model for providing continued educational opportunities to students.

As we progress through the school closure period and BPS Flex Learning evolves, the District will follow the guidance provided by the CT State Department of Education regarding grading for the period of COVID-related closure.  More information regarding grading will be provided by your child’s principal shortly.

With the likelihood end-of-the-year activities will be dramatically different than years past, school leaders are actively engaged in discussions about how to handle traditional end-of-the-year events.  With this in mind, school staff are exploring new ways by which we can honor our students’ achievements.  Our intention is to provide safe opportunities to celebrate the many milestones they have reached.

Finally, starting today, the hours of the meals program changed to 10:30 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. daily.  This was done to make the program more convenient for families.   Weekend meals can be picked up on Fridays.  Meals are distributed from Branford High School and are available to anyone 18 years old or younger.  We encourage you to take advantage of this program and thank everyone who contributes to making this available to our families.

I wish each of you good health and look forward to working with you to teach our children that we can overcome adversity by being thoughtful, hopeful, and compassionate.

Warm regards,

Hamlet M. Hernandez
