April 6, 2020

Dear John B. Sliney Parents and Families,

Thank you so much for your patience, understanding and flexibility as we continue our journey together through this online learning experience with our students.  As a reminder, our teachers will use Google Classroom and email to organize learning experiences and communicate with students and families.  Teachers are available online for each class during a specified portion of the learning block as indicated in the chart below.

Daily Time Block:

9:30 a.m. –

1 p.m.

Learning Experiences for Students

  • Your (child’s) teacher(s) will provide daily guidance and resources to students/families for learning experiences to occur during this time block.
  • Your (child’s) teacher(s) will be virtually available to students and families during this time block.
  • Your (child’s) teacher(s) will communicate with students and families regarding a daily schedule for synchronous communication during this time block.
  • This time block will also include time for Art, Music, or PE, determined by the day of the week. See schedule below.
    • Classroom teachers will send the schedule home to families.
  • Teachers of Art, Music, PE and Science will communicate directly with families and students regarding learning experiences for that day and the time during which the teacher is available for synchronous communication.

Important Reminders:

  • Please note that the instructional day is from 9:30-1:00pm.  But this is not “seat time.”  Students are not expected to be present in front of the computer for this entire time.  There will be different learning experiences (determined by teachers) during blocks of this day.
  • PARENTS/STUDENTS:  Please make sure to check into your child’s Google Classroom everyday and have your child sign-in for attendance.
  • It is to be expected that this sudden change in your children’s school experience, in addition to new family stressors, may cause worry, sadness, anger and frustration for children and families.  Our school social worker and school psychologist are available to support all students and families.  If you are in need of support, please contact our school social worker, Amy King, at or our school psychologist, Jen Rumbin, at

Update on the Elementary Specials Schedule during BPS Flex Plan:

This is the schedule for our four specials classes. Please take some time to review it with your child. The Specialists Teachers will be available from 9:30-1:00 on the days they have classes scheduled. In addition, they will have office hours on days they do not have classes which they will be sharing with you in their google classrooms. Each class (Music, Art, Science, PE) will have their own grade level google classroom for each grade.

In closing, we’ll be sending out report cards for the second trimester this week and a newsletter every Friday evening to keep you informed of updates regarding the BPS Elementary Flex Learning Plan.  If you have any questions, please email me at or call me at (203) 314-0129.
