Dear John B. Sliney Families, 


Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year.  I hope that you are having a relaxing and wonderful summer.  I am looking forward to working with you and your child(ren) this year.  At Sliney, we are committed to providing all of our students with meaningful, high quality and rigorous learning experiences. Our school-wide theme for the 21-22 school year will be “REACH for the STARS!”  Our goal is to enable each and every child to feel successful both academically and socially.  

We also want to challenge everyone to set high goals for themselves, always try their best and stay positive.  Throughout the year, we will learn what it means to “REACH for the STARS” for both students and staff.  We are excited to begin the school year with everyone in-person and look forward to a great school year!

Prior to the first day of school, we will have “Meet the Teacher” Sessions at JBS.  Please note that COVID-19 protocols will be followed during this time.  All students are invited to attend their grade level session time with one family member.  Students, parents and staff are required to wear face coverings/masks while in the building.  Designated entrances for each grade level will be clearly marked for all visitors.  Thank you in advance for all your help with this.

PreK Friday, September 3 - AM Session @ 11:00-11:30 AM 

PreK Friday, September 3 - PM Session @ 1:30-2:00 PM 

Kindergarten:  Friday, September 3- 9:00-9:30 AM

First Grade:  Friday, September 3 -10:30-11:00 AM

Second Grade:  Thursday, September 2 -4:00-4:30 PM

Third Grade:  Friday, September 3 -1:30-2:00 PM

Please read below for important information regarding the start of the school year.  

  • First Day of School will be Wednesday, September 8, 2021. 

  • Elementary SCHOOL HOURS are from 8:40 A.M. to 3:25 P.M.

  • BUS Drop-Off will begin at 8:40 A.M.       Parent Vehicle Drop-Off will begin at 8:45 A.M.

  • BUS Pick-Up  will begin at 3:25 P.M.         Parent Vehicle Pick-Up  will begin at 3:20 P.M. 

Food Services:  

  • BREAKFAST ~ All students will be able to receive FREE breakfast on a daily basis.  Students will be able to get a “grab-n-go” breakfast at the kiosks that are set-up at the entrances to the school building! 

  • LUNCH ~ All students are able to receive a FREE lunch on a daily basis as well!  Students will place their lunch order when they arrive to class in the morning with their classroom teacher. The teacher will then convey the order electronically to the cafeteria. Bagged lunches/snacks from home are an acceptable option.  See your child’s teacher for any class food restrictions or allergies.  Lunch menus are available on our district’s website.  

  • Students will be eating breakfast and lunch in their classrooms.  Weather permitting,   classes will also have the option to have lunch outside in the designated areas.

Recess:  

  • All students will have recess daily.  Teachers and staff will be supervising their classes during this time.  Recess will take place at the Sliney Playground and/or at Hammer Field.  These areas have been designated for playground use for each class.  

Transportation: 

  • Please encourage your child/children to ride the bus! A schedule for the Bus Transportation will be released soon to view.  The bus routes can be found on the district website for parents.  First Student can be reached at (203) 488-6186.

JBS Arrival & Dismissal School Procedures - 2021-2022 

JBS Arrival to School Procedures 

PreK, K-4 Bus Drop Off Procedures 

  • Buses will pull in and drop off students along the sidewalk at the designated area on Eades Street, starting at 8:40 A.M.  

JBS Entrances for Grades PreK, K-4 

Kindergarten and First Grade:  Side Entrance Door by the Playground 

PreK & Second Grade: Main Entrance (Main floor only) 

Third and Fourth Grade:  Side Entrance Door by the Cafeteria 

 

PreK, K-4 Parent Vehicle Drop Off Morning Procedures

  • Parent Vehicle Drop Off will begin at 8:45AM.  

  • Cars will pull in and drop off students along the sidewalk on Eades St.  

  • Staff will signal when a student may exit their vehicle.  Students should be wearing a mask upon exiting the vehicle. 

  • Students will be directed by staff where to enter the building at the designated grade level entrances.   

 

PreK, K-4 Walkers (parents approaching the building on foot) 

  • Parents and students will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing upon entry onto school property. 

  • Parents will be encouraged to leave the school grounds promptly.  

  • Students will be directed by staff when to enter the building at the designated grade level entrances.   

JBS Dismissal from School Procedures 

If your child will be picked up from school, please send in a written note with your child and/or send an email to your child’s teacher and the JBS Main Office email address:  slineyoffice@branfordschools.org.  

PreK, K and 1 -  Parent Vehicle Pick Up Procedures 

  • Pick-Up will begin promptly at 3:20PM.  

  • Cars will pull in along Prospect Street (from Church St. only) sidewalk at the designated area for parent pick up.  

  • Parents will remain in their vehicle.  Please make sure to have your CAR TAG VISIBLE for staff to view through the window! CAR TAGs will be given out to families on the first day of school.  

  • Students will be escorted to their vehicle by a staff member.  

 

Grades 2, 3 and 4 - Parent Vehicle Pick Up Procedures (PICK UP by the CHERRY BLOSSOM TREES)

  • Pick-Up will begin promptly at 3:20PM. 

  • Cars will pull in along Eades Street sidewalk at the designated area for parent pick up.   Cars will need to park past the bus stop area (along the Cherry Blossom Trees).  

  • Parents will remain in their vehicle.  Please make sure to have your CAR TAG VISIBLE for staff to view through the window!  

  • Students will be escorted to their vehicle by a staff member. 

 

PreK, K-4 Bus Dismissal Procedures 

  • Bus Dismissal will begin promptly at 3:25 PM. 

  • Teachers will remain in their classrooms with bus students.  

  • Bus students will be dismissed from the classrooms.   

  • Staff will be assigned to a specific post to monitor students walking in the hallways on 1st, Main and 3rd Floors.    

  • Designated staff members will meet the bus line at the main entrance hallway (outside of the library) to exit and walk the single file line to the bus.  

  • Mask wearing and all CDC guidelines will be adhered to during this time.
