Dear JBS Families,
Thank you to all the families who were able to join the JBS Parent Principal Chat via google-meet last week. We will host our next chat in January. The purpose of this time is to provide families with an opportunity to meet one another, provide time for us to share our elementary school goals, school happenings and to share ideas and ask questions. Our next Parent Chat will be held on January 11, 2022 @ 5:00pm.
On a monthly basis we practice school safety drills such as the evacuation drills formerly known as the fire drills. This month, we will practice a lockdown drill. During this drill, students and staff will practice these safety procedures. Please be assured that classroom teachers and staff have provided time to discuss with their students the purpose of this drill and that it will help keep them safe during an emergency. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Highlight of the Week: Classroom teachers and students have been busy starting Unit 2 in English Language Arts (ELA). Here are some topics that each grade level will be learning in the coming weeks: In Kindergarten, we'll be activating reading strategies - referred to as their reading "superpowers." Students will begin to learn that print carries a message and will be learning about concepts about print, continuing to strengthen their phonological and letter/sound knowledge. As the first informational unit in First Grade, students will still work on breaking the code of reading and will learn that books can teach them and they can teach others through their writing. Second Graders will study, notice details and question texts, ultimately synthesizing information within a text. They will learn that the focus of non-fiction reading is learning how to learn. In the informational unit for Third Grade, students will continue to read a high volume of texts and they will engage in collaborative discussions in order to refine their ideas and strengthen their writing. Fourth graders are learning how to summarize nonfiction texts and organize those summaries into main idea and key details. They will also be integrating information from two or more texts on the same topics in order to deepen their knowledge. And, in writing they will be using their personal expertise to develop their informational writing skills.
Friendly reminder, as we enter into the colder months of the school year, please remember to have your child wear a jacket and warm clothing for recess. Thank you so much for your support with this!
