Reach For The Stars

Dear JBS Families,

It's been a busy month so far at Sliney!  Last week, we hosted virtual town meetings for Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 4 and this week, Grade 2 and Grade 3 will have their town meetings. We talked about our SEL Monthly Theme of KINDNESS, what we learned this month and how we worked together on demonstrating kindness to our school community through our KINDNESS Project!

We also celebrated Read Across America Week with our Character Dress Up Day on March 1st.  Guest Readers visited  all the classrooms with donated picture books from the United Way. We also celebrated reading by having a designated time for every student and staff member to "drop everything and read."  What a great opportunity for ALL to enjoy reading and learning from one another!  Thank you to all parents for encouraging your child/children to read and enjoy learning everyday.

During the month of March, our SEL (social-emotional learning) theme will be PERSEVERANCE.  Here's our definition of perseverance:  persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.  In connection with this theme, we will also be celebrating Women's History Month in different ways.

Reach for the Stars - Family Perseverance Project

We will be asking students to participate in a Reach for the Stars Family Project this month.   As a family, think about a goal that you'd like to work towards, have your child write the dream and/or goal on the star provided by our school and decorate the star.  We will decorate our school with these stars in the main hallway.  Then, as a family, think about the steps that could help you reach your dream or goal, the potential challenges in reaching the goals, how you'd face the challenges and the perseverance it might take to fulfill their dreams.  Please write your name and include a picture/drawing of your family on the star if possible!  More information will be sent home via back-pack by the end of this week.

Some ideas for goals may include:

  • Do something kind each day for a person in your family and/or someone in your community.
  • Listen carefully to others.
  • Read about something new each day and talk to your family about what you learned.
  • Exercise daily or engage in a physical activity outdoors.

Look forward to seeing all your ideas!!

As always, thank you all so much for your on-going support and collaboration.

We hope you all have a great rest of the week.

Best regards, Maria Clark, Principal
