ABOUT THE SCHOOL

John B. Sliney School is a PreK through grade 4 school of approximately 355 students. We have One AM PreK class and One PM PreK class. Currently we have Three Kindergarten sections. Three sections of Grade One, four sections Grade Two, Grade Three and Grade Four. Our class sizes this year are wonderful with average class size of 19. Our school contains an art room, a music room, a well-stocked library, and a gymnasium. Students see these "special" teachers every week for class. We have a computer lab and depending on the grade level they have IPADS, Chromebooks, and desktops in the classrooms.

The staff at JBS is a dedicated and caring group of professionals. We strive to create a school environment which is positive and caring. We also hold high academic standards for our children and believe strongly that all children can learn at high levels. To support our students we have three reading consultants, a math consultant, three special education resource teachers, a speech/language teacher, a school social worker, and a school psychologist. We also have two tutors who work with children who are still learning English.

JBS has a long and proud history. The school opened in 1929 as Branford High School. It was later renamed in honor of John Buckley Sliney. Sliney was born on April 6, 1867 and was educated in Branford schools. He graduated with the Class of 1915 with his future wife, Therese Hall. His peers recognized his leadership qualities, as he was elected class president. His father submitted his name for election to the school board. He served on the Branford Board of Education for thirty-five years and also was First Selectman.
