Reach For The Stars

January 24, 2024 - Sliney Connection

 Dear Families,

We hope this message finds you well. As we navigate through the bustling month of January, we are filled with pride for the incredible efforts and achievements of our students at Sliney Elementary.  Since our return from the winter recess, students across all grades have actively participated in new modules of the HMH Reading Program. Additionally, district-wide winter assessments, including AIMSweb Testing in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, along with informal assessments, have allowed our dedicated teachers and staff to gain valuable insights into each child's academic growth. AIMSweb, a leading assessment tool, facilitates universal screening, progress monitoring, and data management, providing updated information to guide our continuous efforts in fostering better outcomes for our students.

We extend heartfelt kudos to our exceptional teachers and staff for creating safe, structured, and caring environments in every classroom, ensuring our students thrive in all their academic pursuits. Over the past two weeks, our staff has diligently analyzed assessment data, using it to support each and every child's success at Sliney.

On February 6th and February 13th, we will hold our Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you haven't scheduled your conference yet, please contact your child's teacher(s). We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your child's academic and social development!

A friendly reminder for parents: Our Gallery of Heroes Project 2024 is in full swing! As we look ahead, we are thrilled to announce that January and February will be dedicated to learning about famous African Americans. This initiative presents a fantastic opportunity for our students to explore the rich history and contributions of remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on our nation.

Our proactive 4th Grade Student Council Members are taking the lead in educating their peers about the importance of African American History. They are planning classroom visits for read-aloud sessions, aiming to share insights into the contributions of famous African Americans. Furthermore, they are organizing a spirited 4th Grade Spirit Day - Flashback Friday on February 2, 2024.  Stay tuned for more details!

To complement this educational journey, we are introducing the "Gallery of Heroes Project 2024." We invite all students to actively participate by choosing a historical African American figure, conducting research, and presenting their findings through a creative and informative project.

Here's how your child can participate:

  • Choose a historical African American figure who has inspired them.
  • Research and write about this person, highlighting key facts and contributions.
  • Create a drawing or collage representing the notable achievements of the chosen figure.
  • Utilize the attached banner to showcase the project as part of the Gallery of Heroes Project 2024.

We believe this project not only enhances students' knowledge but also encourages creativity and a deeper understanding of the diverse voices that have shaped our history. Hard copies of the project details were sent home last week, and an additional copy is attached for your reference.

We are excited about the incredible projects that will adorn our main entrance hallways, showcasing the dedication and creativity of our students. Your participation in these initiatives contributes immensely to the vibrant and inclusive educational community we are building at Sliney Elementary. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey towards academic excellence.

Together, let's continue to inspire and uplift the next generation of leaders at Sliney!

 Warm regards,  Maria Clark, Principal
