Reach For The Stars

February 9, 2024 - Sliney Connection

Dear Sliney Families,

I hope this message finds you all in good spirits and enjoying the month of February! As we embark on this new month, I'm excited to share some important updates and events happening at our school.

Firstly, a huge thank you to all the families who participated in our  Gallery of Heroes Project. Your involvement and support have truly made the exhibit truly inspiring as students learn about the diversity of heroes celebrated this month!  Thank you for being a part of this activity.

Additionally, this week, we had our  American Heart Association Kick-Off Assembly! Our aim is to have at least 75%-100% of our students register online. A heartfelt thank you to those who have already registered and donated to this important cause. Your generosity and commitment to promoting heart health are commendable!  We will be engaging in several health and wellness activities throughout this month!

In line with promoting kindness and empathy, our monthly Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Theme for February is  KINDNESS! We believe in putting kindness into action, and thus, we are launching a collection drive where each grade level will contribute at least 100 of each of the items below to be donated to local shelters or food banks. The assigned grade level items are as follows:

  • Pre-K and Kindergarten: Toothbrushes
  • First Grade: Socks
  • Second Grade: Granola bars
  • Third Grade: Mac and cheese boxes
  • Fourth Grade: Soap (bar or pump)

Your contributions will make a significant difference in supporting those in need within our community.  Thank you for participation!

The  JBS Annual Cultural Celebration will be held THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria for all students.  This is a fun opportunity for students to share their family's heritage, traditions and history with the Sliney community!  Students will select a country that represents their family heritage and create a trifold visual display and an optional representative food, artifacts, dance or song. Bring your displays and treats, complete with a full ingredient list to share.  All participants will receive a passport to mark down which countries they visit at the event.  Registration is due no later than Friday, February 23.

 Consider these ideas:

  • Where is the country of my family's heritage on a world map?
  • What are cultural traditions from my family's heritage? What traditions do my family participate in today?
  • What recipes are traditional in this country? What could I make that would be easy to share?
  • If you participate in any extra-curricular activities related to your cultural traditions and would like to present, please let us know in advance.

The registration form has been shared via email and we will be sending out hard copies of this information via back-pack mail.  Here's the registration form link:   JBS Cultural Celebration Registration Form

Please contact our JBS PTA Vice President, Keishia Smith: Keishiataylor@gmail.com with any questions.

Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. Together, let's make this February a month filled with learning, reflection, and acts of kindness.

 Warm regards,

Maria Clark, Principal
