Reach For The Stars

Dear JBS Parents and Guardians,

During the month of October, the 4th Grade Student Council Members will be sharing with our entire school community all the different ways that students can "Stand Tall and Reach for the Stars."  Last week, the Student Council helped with morning announcements and gave examples on how they were going to Reach for the Stars at Sliney.

Here are some examples of what the students shared:

  • Always do your best in everything that you do!
  • Set goals and make a plan for how you are going to achieve your goals.
  • Ask for help when you need it.
  • Even when things get hard, never give up. Always keep trying!
  • Be kind to yourself and to everyone around you.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the members of our 4th Grade Student Council for sharing their ideas. The 4th Graders in Student Council are: Stella Papuga-Berman, Liam Murphy, Malak Mohamed, Reese Simpson, Ivanna Rosen and Beau Rebhun.

As a way to promote and continue to think about what our school motto means:  We Stand Tall and Reach for the Stars, we will be asking all students to write and/or draw about what this school motto means to them.  More information will be given to students at the beginning of next week via back-pack. All student drawings/writing will be displayed throughout the building.  Thank you in advance for helping your child think about our school-motto and how they might put this into action at school and at home!

Thanks for your on-going support.  Warmly,  Maria Clark, Principal

Message from Mr. Sean Kennedy, Physical Education Teacher:

Students have been quite busy learning in the JBS gym in physical education classes!  Kindergarten students have PE one time per week and have quickly learned routines, expectations and have begun exploring the many ways we move to be healthy and strong.  First through fourth grade students have PE two times per week and have learned a variety of team building and cooperation skills that we will continue to use throughout the school year.  We have recently wrapped up a unit involving throwing and catching and have begun our study of kicking.

Each PE unit in grades K-4 is aligned with National Shape America learning standards and grade-level outcomes.  Embedded in each lesson within each unit is a variety of cardiovascular, muscular strength/endurance and flexibility concepts and skills.  The ultimate goal is to create a life-long love of movement while building the foundation between exercise and mental and physical well-being.  I continue to be amazed and inspired by the work of our students - please feel free to contact me ( skennedy@branfordschools.org) about how to incorporate movement at home!

Message from Nurse Christin:

Thank you parents and guardians for your cooperation in keeping our JBS community healthy and safe!  Just a reminder that if your child is required to get a Covid test or doctor's note to return to school, it must be received and approved prior to them getting on the bus or entering the school.  Please email documents to cklouda@branfordschools.org or fax to (203) 483-0749.  If a positive result is received, we ask that you notify us as soon as possible so we may take the appropriate mitigation measures.

Attention Pre-K Families:  The State of Connecticut requires all Pre-K students to receive the flu vaccine by December 31st.  Proof of vaccination must be received by that date for your child to return to school in January.

Pre-K, K, 1st:  Please send a change of clothes to be kept in your child's lockers in case of accidents and spills.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at cklouda@branfordschools.org or (203) 481-5386
