Reach For The Stars

Dear John B. Sliney Families, 

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!  At Sliney, we are committed to providing all of our students with meaningful, high quality and rigorous learning experiences in a caring school environment.  Our school-wide theme for this year will continue to be “REACH for the STARS!”  Our goal is to enable each and every child to feel successful both academically and socially.  We also want to challenge all of our students and the school community to set high goals for themselves, always try their best and stay positive.  We are looking forward to working with you and your child(ren) this year!  

The welcome letters from all of our classroom teachers will be mailed out this week!  We will have “Meet the Teacher” Sessions on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.  Please continue to check the Sliney and the BPS District Websites for more information and updates.  Designated entrances for each grade level will be clearly marked for all visitors.  Please see the schedule below:  

Meet the Teacher Sessions 

Kindergarten:  Wednesday, August 31st - 9:00-9:30 AM 

First Grade:  Wednesday, August 31st - 10:30-11:00 AM

Second Grade:  Wednesday, August 31st -4:00-4:30 PM

Third Grade:  Wednesday, August 31st - 1:30-2:00 PM 

Fourth Grade:  Wednesday, August 31st - 2:30-3:00 PM

 

JBS Entrances for Grades K-4 

Kindergarten and First Grade:  Side Entrance Door by the Sliney Playground 

Second Grade: Main Entrance (Main floor only) 

Third and Fourth Grade:  Side Entrance Door by the Sliney Cafeteria 

Please read below for important information regarding the start of the school year.  

  • First Day of School will be Thursday, September 1, 2022.  

  • Elementary SCHOOL HOURS are from 8:55 A.M. to 3:25 P.M.

  • BUS Drop-Off will begin at 8:40 A.M.       Parent Vehicle Drop-Off will begin at 8:45 A.M.

  • BUS Pick-Up  will begin at 3:25 P.M.        Parent Vehicle Pick-Up  will begin at 3:20 P.M. 

  • Students arrive no earlier than 8:40AM and no later than 9:00AM to ensure that they are not marked tardy and/or reported absent.  

  • To ensure the safety of your child, please contact your child’s teacher ahead of time for any and all changes to your child’s schedule with a hand-written note or email.  Please email your child’s teacher and the Main Office email: slineyoffice@branfordschools.org to provide written documentation of your child’s transportation schedule.  

  • All school visitors must sign in when entering the school building entrance and report to the main office.  

  • Car Pick-Up Tags for Dismissal:  All families will receive a Pick-Up/Dismissal Tag and Child’s backpack tag during the Meet the Teacher Sessions and/or on the first day of school.  When picking up your child at the end of the day, all cars must have the 22-23 Pick-Up Tag displayed for proper identification.  More information on the arrival and dismissal procedures will be provided this week via email.  

Food Services:  

  • BREAKFAST & LUNCH will be served on a regular basis.  Bagged lunches/snacks from home are acceptable options. 

  • Students will place their lunch order when they arrive to class in the morning with their classroom teacher. The teacher will then convey the order electronically to the cafeteria.

  • Bagged lunches/snacks from home are an acceptable option.  See your child’s teacher for any class food restrictions or allergies.  

  • Lunch menus are available on our district’s website.  

  • Students will be eating breakfast in their designated classrooms. Students will have lunch in the JBS Cafeteria.  

  • The school district will be sending out information regarding the meals, prices and all changes/updates for the coming school year.  Free & Reduced packets and forms will also be available for families to complete if needed. 

Recess:  

  • All students will have recess daily.  

  • Teachers and paraprofessionals will be supervising classes during this time.  Recess will take place at the Sliney Playground and/or at Hammer Field.  

  • Classes will go outside weather permitting.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  

Transportation: 

  • Please encourage your child/children to ride the bus.  This helps facilitate regular routines and foster independence.  

  • A schedule for the Bus Transportation will be released soon to view on the district website.  All students will be assigned a school bus or van regardless if they are planning to take it or not.  

  • Without prior or proper school notification about your child’s transportation schedule, students will go home on the bus everyday.
