Reach For The Stars

January 12, 2024 - Sliney Connection

Dear John B. Sliney Families,

Welcome back to another edition of our Sliney Family Connection, the Sliney Family Newsletter! As we delve into the heart of January, I am thrilled to share some exciting updates and upcoming projects at Sliney Elementary School.

Since the beginning of the month, our students have been immersed in the theme of courage, drawing inspiration from historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. as they explore different ways to embody this essential virtue in their lives.

Looking ahead, I am delighted to announce that, during the months of January and February, we will be focusing on learning about famous African Americans. This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for our students to delve into the rich history and contributions of remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on our nation.

As part of this educational journey, we are introducing the "Gallery of Heroes Project 2024." We invite all students to actively participate in this project by choosing one or more historical African Americans, researching their lives, and sharing their findings through a creative and informative project.

 Here's how you can participate:

  • Choose a historical African American figure who has inspired you.
  • Research and write about this person, highlighting key facts and contributions.
  • Create a drawing or collage that represents the notable achievements of your chosen figure.
  • Utilize the attached banner to showcase your project as part of the Gallery of Heroes Project 2024.

We believe that this project not only enhances students' knowledge but also encourages creativity and a deeper understanding of the diverse voices that have shaped our history.

In addition to our ongoing projects, we have witnessed incredible moments of leadership and pride at Sliney. Our 4th-grade Student Council members have taken the lead in hosting mini-town meetings, revisiting our Sliney Pledge - "Reach for the Stars," and reinforcing school-wide expectations.  We are so proud of each of them!

We also celebrated our first Safety Patrol Induction Ceremony, where our 4th graders embraced their roles as role models and leaders. A heartfelt thank you to all the families and members of our school community who attended and supported this special event.  Thank you to Mr. Lou and Mrs. Glazewski for all their hard work!

Thank you in advance for your enthusiastic participation in the Gallery of Heroes Project 2024. We look forward to celebrating the incredible work of our students as we honor and showcase the accomplishments of famous African Americans throughout history.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to reach out to me at mclark@branfordschools.org or (203) 314-0129.

Here's to a month filled with learning, courage, and celebration!

 Warm regards,

Maria Clark, Principal
